2014 Vintage Single Malt Whisky

When it began producing in 2008, this craft whisky-making operation was the first Japanese whisky distillery to open since 1973. Ichiro Akuto has insisted on a hands-on approach, with an onsite cooperage and production of just 90,000 litres a year.

"Chichibu basically kicked off the new wave of Japanese whisky – not just because it was new, but because the founder, Ichiro Akuto, deliberately set out to make interesting (even challenging!) whiskies instead of the easy-to-drink ones that used to dominate Japanese markets."

Tasting Notes

This whisky is a perfect example of how a concept is followed through from the beginning. This is not an IPA finish to swirl in some hoppy notes at the end of its life; its journey was meticulously planned.

Nose

Starting with honey and lemon herbal tea, buttery popcorn, ginger and eucalyptus.

Palate

Immensely complex with banana, pineapple, apricot, orange blossom, and more honey.

Finish

Slightly bitter and hoppy IPA notes – then dominated confected raspberry/pineapple chewy sweets.
