Denmark
The best known drink from Denmark is beer... probably. But the reason it is so engrained in Danish culture is that grains – especially wheat and barley – cover over half of the country’s arable land. Denmark exports significant amounts of barley to the Scotch whisky industry. And, around 20 years ago, Danes decided to start making whisky themselves. The rise of Nordic whisky coincided with a general movement in Denmark towards celebrating flavour, innovation and local ingredients (Noma restaurant opened two years before the first whisky distillery). And the best Danish whisky today is using unusual combinations of grains and methods to produce a wide range of flavour.
