Formerly a Royal Navy supplier, Caroni is now a ghost distillery with cult status. This is one of a pair of sister casks acquired by Elixir, each column-distilled in 1997 and aged for 13 years on the island, and a further 16 years in Scotland.

“Caroni continued to produce this particular, heavy style, different to most Trinidad rum, even after the Navy stopped the daily rum ration. After all this time, each of these casks has developed its own character. This one, #182, is bursting with juicy citrus notes, with vanilla, bitter chocolate and dry spices.”
Tasting Notes
Nose
Grapefruit and cocoa with mandarin and lime. The citrus continues to grow and develop with rich orange juice alongside cardamon and nutmeg.
Palate
Thick and juicy with loads of rich orange and dried mango. Some lovely vanilla soda and black cracked pepper.
Finish
Dried tarragon with dark bitter chocolate and lovely orange oil.

The ghost of Trinidad
Caroni Distillery ceased distilling in 2002, but that was far from the end of the story. Two years later, it began its second life as the cult rum.
