Trinidad

Trinidad certainly loves its rum. However, compared to Jamaica and Barbados, this island just a few miles off the South American coast only flourished briefly as a rum-producing nation. Sugar cane was only planted in great amounts in the 1800s and, at the turn of the 20th century, its most famous liquid was the cocktail bitters produced at the Angostura distillery.  A rum boom did happen – there was a time in the 20th century when Trinidad had over 50 distilleries. But these have all since closed, ironically leaving only the one that took up rum distillery belatedly... Angostura. That produces a very smooth and fruity column-distilled rum, in marked (or, rather, marqued) contrast to the rum from the legendary Caroni ghost distillery, the collector’s favourite.
