2006 Vintage Pot & Column Still Rum

This is blended pot still and column still molasses rum from a family-run distillery located in a former sugar factory in south-east Barbados. It was aged there in ex-bourbon casks for 14 years before we transferred it into fresher bourbon casks for four years' slower maturation in Scotland.

In this bottling, I like the herbal and floral notes, balancing the smoothness of butterscotch and maple syrup.”

Tasting Notes

Nose

I get desiccated coconut, toasted marshmallow and warm butterscotch. I like the beautiful florality with rose petals and orange blossom that softens the edges.

Palate

Thick and luscious, with orange citrus, maple syrup and mocha, with a touch of fresh raspberry – which is followed and tempered by some delicate dry spice.

Finish

Mandarin and dusty chocolate linger.

“This shows off the huge spectrum of Jamaican rum. Instead of the strong overripe fruit flavours of famous ‘high-ester’ styles, this goes for a more complex approach. A traditional ‘double-retort’ pot still helps make it crisp and precise but with depth: banana bread with orange and spice. To highlight that complexity, we matured this without much cask influence.”

“I find Nordic whisky’s experimental approach really exciting - especially the approach to grain at Thy. This has a mash bill of organically grown rye, spring barley and, unusually…spelt. It’s that last ingredient which gives the whisky a honeyed nuttiness to balance the spice, pepper, orange and herbal notes from the rye.”
